Locustep

Terms of Service

Effective October 20, 2026

Locustep gives you information and planning tools to help you decide where to move. It is not financial, tax, legal or real estate advice, and the decision is yours. Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

Agreement

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Locustep, the website at locustep.com and its features (the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Locustep.

Who can use Locustep

You must be 13 or older to create an account and 18 or older (and able to form a binding contract) to make a purchase. When you create an account you confirm that you are 13 or older.

Information only, not advice

Locustep ranks U.S. states against the preferences you give it and estimates costs using public data from sources such as HUD, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, FEMA, the FBI, the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, state revenue departments and Freddie Mac. This data can be out of date, incomplete or different from your actual situation. Scores, rankings, tax and cost estimates, and the Net-Impact report are estimates for general information.

Locustep is not financial, tax, legal, insurance or real estate advice. Before making decisions about moving, jobs, housing or money, check the details that matter to you and consult a qualified professional where appropriate. You are responsible for your decisions.

Accounts

You don’t need an account for Locustep’s free features. If you create one, keep your password secure and your email address current. You are responsible for activity on your account. Tell us promptly if you believe someone else has accessed it.

Premium purchase

Your content

The answers, notes, plans and other information you enter belong to you. You give us permission to store, sync and process that content only as needed to provide the Service to you. You can export or delete it at any time, as described in the Privacy Policy.

Suggestions and feedback

If you send us a suggestion, idea or other feedback, we may use it, change it and build on it in Locustep without owing you anything and without having to credit you. We will not publish your name or message without your permission.

Acceptable use

Please don’t:

Third-party content and links

State photos come from Wikimedia Commons. Each photo is shown with its author and license, and that license applies to the photo. Videos are provided by YouTube. Some of the data behind our estimates comes from third parties named on the Sources page in the app, such as Freddie Mac. That data remains the property of its owners. Locustep links to outside websites, such as government agencies, movers and real-estate sites. We don’t control those sites and aren’t responsible for their content, products or practices.

Our intellectual property

Locustep’s software, design, text and name belong to us or our licensors. These Terms give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the Service. They do not transfer ownership of anything to you.

Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON’T GUARANTEE THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY ESTIMATE WILL MATCH YOUR ACTUAL RESULTS.

Limitation of liability

TO THE EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, LOCUSTEP WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, SAVINGS, DATA OR OPPORTUNITIES, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR DECISIONS YOU MAKE BASED ON IT. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR US$50. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

Indemnity

If you misuse the Service or break these Terms and that leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, to the extent the law allows.

Ending your use

You can stop using Locustep and delete your account at any time. Deleting your account ends your Premium access with it, because Premium belongs to the account and can’t be moved to another one. A purchase made within the last 14 days can still be refunded under the Refund Policy. We may suspend or close accounts that break these Terms or put the Service or other users at risk. Where reasonable, we will tell you why first. If we decide to shut down Locustep, we will give reasonable advance notice so you can export your data.

Changes

We may update these Terms. If a change is material, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Locustep after a change takes effect, the updated Terms apply.

Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida and applicable U.S. federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, you keep any protections that the laws of your place of residence give you.

If you have a problem with Locustep, please contact us first at support@locustep.com and give us 30 days to try to fix it. If we can’t resolve it, either of us may bring the claim in the state or federal courts located in the State of Florida, and you and we agree to those courts. Either of us may instead bring an eligible claim in small-claims court, and nothing here stops you from using a court or agency that the law where you live gives you the right to use.
